The very first step in learning to crochet

Hi Crocheters (or soon-to-be crocheters!)

Ahead of the first meeting next week I thought I would share with you the first step of any crochet project- the chain. This initial chain forms the basis of any (well almost any) piece of crochet. Unfortunately it is the bit that often takes the longest to master as a beginner, but please, persevere as once you have mastered it you are away!

This YouTube video shows it nicely, so have a go!

It is often when first starting out to struggle a bit with working out the best way to hold the yarn and hook. The best thing about crochet however it that really, it is up to you! Have a play around and find the most comfortable position for you. Like most things its way easier if you have a bit of space and decent light.

Take a look at these tutorials, the first from Kat Goldin and is really fantastic. Its always good to have a look at a couple of tutorials though, and this one from  Simply Crochet is pretty good too!

A great book to go to is this. Its for children but is really clear and describes things brilliantly. I used it loads when I first started learning.

Good luck and don't worry at all if you are struggling, we can all help each other out next week :-)

Can't wait to meet you all,

Sally x
